“Fulfilment reworks the theme from the Beethoven Frieze and predates The Kiss. The three couples are similar, with the man shielding his lover while exposing her face. In all versions, the man’s head is level with hers; in The Kiss, the woman kneels, while in the others, the man is taller. All three works feature a gold background, setting them apart from ordinary love.

The man’s robe has squares within squares in black, white, grey, and gold. Klimt contrasts these shapes with circles and spirals to illustrate masculinity and femininity. The overlapping shapes suggest a physical and spiritual union, as seen in The Kiss.”
