Description
Judith, a biblical heroine, seduced and decapitated General Holofernes to save her city, Bethulia, from the Assyrian army. This story, symbolizing virtue overcoming vice, was popular among Old Masters, notably depicted by Caravaggio. In Klimt’s “Judith and the Head of Holofernes,” Judith is portrayed as a Viennese beauty, modeled by Adele Bloch-Bauer. Klimt’s depiction shocked Vienna with Judith’s sensuality and orgasmic expression, leading many to mistake her for Salome. The heavy gold choker Judith wears symbolically decapitates her, and her clothes both conceal and reveal her body. The painting was quickly acquired by Klimt’s contemporary, Ferdinand Hodler.
