Description
Presented in March 1901 at the tenth Secession Exhibition, Medicine was the second of the University of Vienna Ceiling Paintings, Once featuring a column of nude figures representing the river of life, a floating young nude female with a newborn infant symbolizing life, and death represented by a skeleton. The only link between the floating woman and the river of bodies is two arms, one from the woman and one from a man. At the bottom, Hygeia, the mythological daughter of the god of medicine, stands with the Aesculapian snake and the cup of Lethe, turning her back to mankind. Klimt depicted an ambiguous unity of life and death, without celebrating medicine or healing. Klimt adhered to traditional depictions of Hygeia but added a column of light, nude figures, and a skeleton to symbolize Death. This portrayal received criticism for its lurid depiction of the human form and the suggestion that medicine couldn’t prevent death. Medicine was one of Klimt’s early works exploring the female form in detail. This image is a 1/6th representation of the original featuring Hygeia in a new light.
