Description
In 1877, early in his career, John Singer Sargent spent the summer painting in Cancale, a Breton fishing town. He created sketches for his first major outdoor subject, producing two versions: En route pour la pêche for Paris and Fishing for Oysters at Cancale for Boston. Using fluid brushwork, Sargent painted individual figures on-site and completed the compositions in his studio. His choice of subject was influenced by contemporary interest in peasant life, especially fisher-folk.
