John Singer Sargent’s composition and brushwork bring freshness to the 19th-century subject of peasant life.
Despite its spontaneous appearance, Sargent meticulously prepared the painting for the 1878 Paris Salon, understanding its conservative nature. The painting quickly found a patron, marking the second sale of Sargent’s career.”
