Description
Madame Pierre Gautreau (Virginie Amélie Avegno; 1859–1915) was famous in Paris for her striking appearance. Sargent painted her portrait to boost his reputation, highlighting her bold style with a slipping gown strap. The 1884 Salon ridiculed the portrait, leading Sargent to repaint the strap. He kept the work for over thirty years, eventually selling it to the Metropolitan Museum, calling it his best work but requesting the sitter’s name be disguised.
